    OT: EV horn questions

I picked up an HR60 and an HR120 locally at a good price. Nothing was available besides the horns.......... I have no idea where they came out of.

Would one be preferable over the other in a home environment? I'm wondering if I should sell them, or sell one to buy another to make a pair.

What would be ideal for a driver, and what would be a cheap alternative?

I notice that the 120 is quite a bit heavier, than the 60, but not that much bigger.

    Note the 1.3 inch throat

If I were going to use them, probably the 120's

I would look for the old DH1012 it was originally the MF1012 for Kustom several years prior

    Aluminum fram 400-10k or so

    You would want tweets

BEWARE the newer fram is Titanium make sure it says 1012 on the fram

The DH2012 isn't as nice sounding it's essentially an Altec 906 but 906 has Altec throat

    Re: OT: EV horn questions

EV's 1.3" throat was closer to 1.38". Proof of this is that EV now calls their throat "1.4".
Earlier EV drivers listed as 2" actually had a flare adapter from 1.4"-to-2". In recent years EV removed the adapter. You must buy an accessory adapter to put a new EV large-format driver on an older EV horn with a 2" throat.

Years ago I was involved in a horn/driver comparison test between Altec, EV, and JBL. We found that the EV and JBL 2" throats use the same bolt-pattern. We, of course, had to swap drivers and listen.

It is now my opinion that 30% or more of the sound quality comes from the horn.

You can drill the EV flange and mount an Altec large-format driver. It will physically match up and it might sound great . . .

I thought the consensus from previous discussions here at AUB was that the 906 is a modified DH1?

In essence a DH1 that has been shortened to the point where the throat is 1.4 dia., and that Altec possibly did something a little different with the phragm. I'm fairly sure that a DH1 diaphragm will bolt right up to the 906 and work without issue.

Is the DH2012 a predecessor or close relative to the DH1?

Edit: OK i just looked at them(DH1's), and i guess i've never noticed before but the DH1 is a little larger in diameter and appears built differently than the 906. I can't find a good pic of a DH2012, but the fuzzy spec sheet pic looks just as i remember the 906's. We used to have a pair of cabinets we used as drum fills that had 906's on mantarays in them, i swear one had an EV diaphragm in it as i had them apart to do bodywork and paint, i'm nearly positive it was marked "DH1" w/proper EV logo. Is this possible, or have i spent too much time out breathing in the crowd?

I do not remember the previous discussion, however, I have a little knowledge on this subject. The Altec 906-8A was a DH2012 with the 1.4"-to-2" throat adapter removed and Altec's bolt-pattern added. The DH2012 is an earlier version of the DH1. It is very likely a DH1 diaphragm will bolt right in a DH2012.

The Altec 288 was refused THX status due to a very narrow dip in response around 12Khz (some say THX was pissed at Altec for turning them down when they first started). The DH2012 had already been THX accepted and an Altec system loaded with this driver would also be accepted. It was . . .

    You got it assbackards.

The driver was originally the MF1012. Essentially the same driver was the DH1012,

This evolved into the DH2012 which the Altec is derived from.

THEN came the DH1 not before. The snout was added because for a while you had to have a 2 inch throat to qualify for THX. EV cheated and just molded the adapter on.

There is an MT driver still with the old throat.

    Electrovoice DH 1A/MT drivers

The DH1 Titanium fram is the only replacement for all these drivers.

The original design dates to the 70's with the smaller throat so, no the Altec is not a modded DH1 the DH1 is an evolution of the 2012 which the Altec is based on. The 2012 fram was aluminum Altec did nothing except rate it more honestly to 13k.

Like many philosophical discussions Descartes is getting before the horse.

a little confusing there The one with an adapter was a small format DH-2 IMHO 2 inch fram is still small format. all other mfg's call it small

    http://www.pa-anlagen.ch/Manuals/Ele...A-16%20EDS.pdf

The DH1A did NOT have an adapter it was 2 inch but the adapter was cast on permanently as a snout and not removable- it was the 2012/Altec 906 with a little more mag...it's fram is replacement for earlier drivers

    http://archives.telex.com/archives/E...DH1A%20EDS.pdf

EV went back to smaller throats in large format in their current offerings

They offered them all along in systems but as MT models, but I don't think they could be bought separately

2 inch drivers all use the bolt pattern from the late 30's WE 31 horn AFAIK, I think community has an oddball

You are correct that the "snout" on the DH2012/DH1 was not removable. However, it still adapts a 1.38" driver so it can fit a 2" throat. A true 2" driver has a voice-coil diameter around 4". The voice-coil of all EV large-format drivers are 3" (Altec's 288 is 2.8"). It is very likely the 906-8A was made using the motor structure of a large-format driver from an MT-type system.

:2thumbsup:100% agreement on the 3 inch coil..I have insisted in other forums the plethora of 2 inch drivers with 3 inch are really medium format

the 906 is essentially the 2012. The MT stuff came much later and has the DH1's bigger mag which the 906 doesn't have

It may well be the MT is the 906 with a bigger mag however..since Altec was shut down and Altec items pulled into EV.
I have never been inclined to check...

Due to the extra weight (smaller chance of needing dampening) or the dispersion?

I would look for the old DH1012.......
I don't see any on ebay, but will keep my eye out for them.

Any decent, yet cheap, options from another company, like maybe Selenium?

I'm just kicking around ideas, for now.
